After worrying about how braces might look, your next concern is probably how to brush your teeth with braces on.
It’s a common worry, but all it takes is a little adjustment period. Once you learn the basics, you’ll have no problems keeping your teeth clean and healthy while wearing braces.
1. Brush And Floss Regularly
When you’re wearing braces, it’s even more important to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once. Always brush for at least two minutes. If you can brush or at least rinse your mouth well after every meal, this will help. With the brackets and wires, it’s easier for bacteria and plaque to build up. Even though it may take a little longer, sticking to a routine will make sure your teeth look great when the braces come off.
2. Focus On Every Bracket And Wire
Learning how to brush your teeth with braces might seem hard at first. Before braces, you simply brushed your teeth. Now, you need to pay extra attention to every bracket and wire. Take your time and brush gently around everything. This allows you to remove more plaque without damaging your braces.
3. Use A Floss Threader
Flossing is the hardest part. However, if you use a floss threader or a self-threading flosser, it’s much easier. A floss threader allows you to run the floss above and below the wire. Always use waxed floss so it doesn’t tear in your braces. You may also want to consider a water flosser to avoid the need for floss at all.
4. Use Soft Picks Or Brush Picks
Sometimes, floss and a toothbrush still won’t remove stubborn food particles stuck in your braces. Soft picks or brush picks look like advanced toothpicks, but gently remove food from between your teeth and in your braces. They come in different varieties and are located with the floss in most stores. You can also ask your orthodontist to recommend the right type for your teeth.
5. Replace Your Toothbrush Often
Many people use their toothbrush for six months. However, it’s now recommended to replace your toothbrush every three months. Braces can wear down the bristles faster. Consider replacing your toothbrush more often to get the best possible results. As soon as the bristles start showing much wear, even if it’s only been six weeks, replace your toothbrush.
